FEES: Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing

FEES is an instrumental swallowing assessment that allows a trained SLP to directly visualize the pharynx (throat) and larynx (voice box) during swallowing.

A small, flexible endoscope is passed through the nose to observe swallowing anatomy and function in real time. This provides detailed information about airway protection, residue, and swallowing safety, helping guide accurate diagnosis and management plan for any swallowing difficulties.

WHo is it for?

FEES may be appropriate for adults who experience:

  • difficulty swallowing food, liquids, or medications

  • coughing, choking, or throat clearing during meals

  • sensation of food sticking in the throat

  • changes in voice quality during or after eating (e.g., wet or gurgly voice)

  • recurrent chest infections or suspected aspiration

  • unexplained weight loss or dehydration

  • age-related swallowing changes (presbyphagia)

  • neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia)

  • head and neck cancer (before or after treatment)

benefits of fees

  • Direct visualization of swallowing anatomy and function

  • No radiation exposure or use of barium

  • Can be completed anywhere (i.e. clinic or bedside)

  • Suitable for medically complex or frail individuals

  • Allows assessment with real foods and liquids

  • Supports timely, informed swallowing management decisions

FEES provides valuable diagnostic information that cannot be obtained through screening or clinical observation alone.

OVerview of procedure

A thin, flexible scope is gently passed through the nose to view the throat. The individual is then asked to swallow foods and liquids while swallowing function is observed. The procedure is typically well tolerated and completed within a short appointment.

Findings are discussed following the assessment, and appropriate recommendations are provided.
